The Mission of AVID
The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
á
Course Description
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a year-long elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success. Each week, students receive instruction that uses a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor‐led study groups, motivational activities, and academic survival skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that use strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth.
á
The sixth grade AVID Elective course is an introduction to the AVID philosophy. Students will develop awareness of the values accompanying academic goals and success.áThe course will focus on building self-confidence and communication skills in working with peers and adults. Students will be exposed to reading strategies that will assist in vocabulary building and understanding a variety of texts, and will also focus on prewriting techniques, summary writing and structural components of note-taking. The students will increase college and career awareness through guest speaker presentations, field trip opportunities, and research.

Our AVID Mission:áOur mission for this year in AVID is to become educated and responsible young adults, to accomplish every assignment to the best of our ability, and, most importantly, to have fun! THINK COLLEGE!
